Beginning this Sunday, and continuing throughout the year on each 4th Sunday, we will pay attention to and learn from one of the saints of the church. Today, in the sermon Jake considered the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., who, on this month, is officially remembered with a national holiday. In fact, he is the only African American, the only pastor, the only individual who is honored by our country in this way. Join us as we consider the ways he reminds us of what it means to be a follower of Jesus.
"And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." -Colossians 2:15
"I have to do this, to expose myself, to bring this hate out into the open." -MLK
Our saints remind us who we are really meant to be. Yes, they are flawed, as well. (Hebrews 12:1-3)
In the face of enemies:
1. Proclamation: the art of truth-telling
2. Presence: the art of loving
3. Perseverance: the art of trusting
These are art-forms, they require creativity, as well as sacrifice.
